Product description

This kit creates a mobile robot that automatically follows lines. Using its sensors, the vehicle detects dark tracks on a light-colored surface and controls the two drive motors so that it follows the line. The wooden construction is easy to handle and is more forgiving of assembly inaccuracies than plastic.

The function is based on two light sensors that scan the contrast between the surface and the track. As soon as one of the sensors loses the dark line, the simple electronics adjust the motor speed and steer the vehicle accordingly. The 4.5 V batteries provide approximately two hours of operating time. Since no programming is required, the robot drives immediately after assembly.

Applications include schools and makerspaces, where beginners can try out basic robotics concepts, as well as hobby projects for exploring mechanical construction in greater depth. The robot works on smooth paper or floor coverings on which clear lines can be drawn with a black marker. Depending on the curve radius and track width, the vehicle handles curves and intersections with varying degrees of success.

The three AA batteries required for operation are not included. The line should be at least two centimeters wide and drawn with a dark marker. Reliability decreases on very rough or uneven surfaces; the robot works best on level, smooth surfaces.

Safety information

The motors and battery compartment are not accessible during normal operation. The kit is intended for assembly and operation in private or educational settings. Dispose of depleted batteries in accordance with electronic waste regulations.
