Product Description
This level shifter adapts I2C communication between components with different logic voltages. The MOSFET-based circuit converts signals bidirectionally without requiring an additional power supply. The shifter operates passively via the bus's pull-up resistors.
The shifter connects 3 V systems, such as certain sensors or microcontrollers, with 5 V logic, as found on common development boards. The four independent channels provide parallel data paths; two channels are used for the I2C standard (clock line and data line), while two additional channels are available for signals. Bidirectional operation eliminates the need to switch manually between voltage ranges.
Applications arise wherever components with different logic voltages are used together in a project, such as integrating 3.3 V microcontrollers with 5 V sensor boards, connecting multiple specialized I2C modules to a central host board with a different operating voltage, or expanding existing circuits with components whose logic levels cannot be changed. In industrial prototyping, the module eliminates the need for separate shifters for each channel.
The module requires correctly dimensioned pull-up resistors on both sides of the I2C bus; it does not provide them itself. Connecting the power supply pins to the respective logic voltages is essential for the MOSFET switching to operate. Projects requiring more than four channels need either multiple modules or alternative shifters.
